Course DescriptionStudents in this AP English Language and Composition will read and carefully analyze a broad and challenging range of nonfiction prose selections, depending their awareness of rhetoric and how language works. Through close reading and frequent writing, students develop their ability to work with language and text with a greater awareness of purpose and strategy, while strengthening their own composing abilities. Course readings feature expository, analytical, personal, and argumentative texts from a variety of authors and historical contexts. This course also includes a survey of the major works in American Literature and ACT and SAT preparation. Students must demonstrate sophisticated reading and writing skills in preparation for the Advanced Placement English Language and Composition exam in May as it will contain various informational texts that require rhetorical analysis, synthesis, and argumentative style analytics. Understandings of the texts, graphs, and images within the exam will be assessed in the form of multiple choice and written assessments that are scored using CollegeBoard's AP scoring principles.
